When a stator begins to fail, it prioritizes critical systems like ignition and fuel injection, while robbing power from less essential components such as power steering, lights, and winches. That’s why you’ll often notice flickering lights or weak accessory performance before the machine completely shuts down.

Causes of a Faulty UTV Stator
- Heat buildup – prolonged high RPM or heavy loads can overheat the windings.
- Oil contamination – a leaking seal can let oil degrade insulation and cause shorts.
- Water or mud intrusion – moisture and debris can corrode wiring or connectors.
- Physical damage – damaged flywheel magnets or impact can break windings.
- Age and wear – insulation breaks down over time, especially in hard-use machines.
Concerns with a Bad Stator
- Battery won’t stay charged, leaving you stranded.
- Weak spark can cause misfires, stalling, or poor performance.
- Overcharging or undercharging can damage the regulator/rectifier and battery.
- Can leave you without lights, winch, or accessories in critical situations on the trail.
Symptoms of a Faulty Stator
- Battery constantly dead or not holding charge.
- Engine hard to start, runs rough, or stalls randomly.
- Headlights dim or flicker with RPM changes.
- Loss of power to accessories (radio, GPS, winch, etc.).
- Burnt electrical smell or visible damage to stator wiring/plug.
